FROM THE ARTIST

These works are part of a series called The Algorithms. They are purposefully created to be inaccessible and difficult to understand at first. Similar to how we have been programmed to act and react in performative ways in our everyday lives. They also reflect the way we all experience the world at times, not being able to understand something or somebody – either because of personal, cultural, or language barriers. The feeling of being an outsider. Being misunderstood. They are ultimately about empathy. Knowing that there is a connection between people in misunderstanding, otherness, and the fact that we are not always accessible to each other all the time. Contemplate, Dream, Nothing Beautiful, and Scarlet Fire are all about finding this accessibility with empathy.

ABOUT DAVID HAIG ALEXANDER

David Haig Alexander is a Washington, D.C.-based figurative painter and sculptor. His work is about light and the relativistic nature of color. Using the totem as a visual storytelling motif, he explores hierarchies, power dynamics, and connections between nature, the artificial, and the superficial. Alexander previously worked as a Senior User Experience Strategist engineering digital marketing campaigns and large-scale business solutions for brands like Sony Pictures, Coca-Cola, and Marriott Hotels, which has had a great influence on his recent work. In a recent series on display in the ADMO area, he installed four interactive works in a commercial setting at The Green Island Cafe, a local jazz bar, that functions to engage patrons with the art and space while also marketing the business.
