Double Exposure examines the art of avoidance through the photographic practice of Washington D.C based photographer, Ayanah George. Working across film and digital photography, George creates images that foreground beauty, intimacy, and feminine presence while holding emotional and psychological realities that often remain unspoken. Her portraits position photography as both representation and refuge—a space where personal history, memory, and self-fashioning converge.

The title “Double Exposure” functions as both a photographic technique and a conceptual framework. By layering images within a single frame, George evokes multiplicity, fragmentation, and emotional overlap, reflecting the ways beauty and pain, visibility and concealment, often coexist. Her use of film, with its painterly softness, tonal richness, and nostalgic quality, further deepens this tension, allowing the work to operate as both archive and coping mechanism.

The exhibition also offers viewers a window into the artist’s behind-the-scenes experience through audio reflections and selected quotations from George, which reveal the emotional conditions surrounding the work’s creation. These materials invite the viewer into the space between the finished image and lived experience, making visible the often-hidden process of creating through heartbreak, uncertainty, and endurance.

Throughout the installation, multicolored glass vases and florals extend these themes materially and symbolically. Fragile yet luminous, they echo the photographs’ attention to beauty as a form of care, while their layered color and ephemerality suggest emotional complexity, impermanence, and the cultivated surfaces through which pain is often negotiated. In this exhibition, double exposure becomes a language for the messy middle, where what is seen is inseparable from what is withheld.
