Jeanette Woods
Jeanette Woods is an abstract painter whose work is driven by color, expressive mark-making, and the tension between form and space.
Self-taught, Woods began her practice working with watercolor on paper. Early in her development, a teacher recognized the energy in her work and encouraged her to move to larger formats than standard sized watercolor paper. She expanded into abstraction on canvas. That shift led to an ongoing exploration of acrylic on both primed and unprimed canvas, where she continues to experiment with surface, absorption, and layered color.
Outside the studio,Woods has spent her professional life as a documentarian and journalist, teaching communities the craft of narrative storytelling.
Her work is grounded in the belief that art and storytelling belong to everyone. She creates public programs to train people to be creative catalysts in their communities and develops events where neighbors tell stories about collective memories and collective hopes for the future.
That background informs Woods’ studio practice: she listens for the voice of each painting, allowing rhythm and structure to surface gradually.

Jeanette Woods’ work is driven by color, expressive mark-making, and the tension between form and space.
Her paintings unfold through layered washes of pigment that alternately blur and define shape. Surfaces are scraped, soaked, and reworked, allowing boundaries to sharpen or dissolve as the composition evolves.
Though each painting develops intuitively, her work carries a distinct visual language — strong color relationships, confident form, and a sense of movement that emerges through process rather than preplanning.
Across her work, the underlying aim remains constant — to evoke a sense of beauty that feels discovered rather than imposed.
