FROM THE ARTIST

In the summers when I was a little girl, my Aunt Irene would have us gather stones. We would paint the tops of them with watercolors. When the blue ran into the red, it made purple. Amazing. I’ve never lost that sense of wonder about transformation and using objects in unexpected ways. In the pieces displayed here, I strive to showcase the architecture and beauty of everyday objects in quilt-like wall hangings that reflect my West Virginia roots. Keys, long and curved and notched in design, are drilled and sewn together with metal chain. Bold and ornate vintage hardware are woven into art pieces with symmetry and negative space or pops of color in the compositions. Watches are disassembled and the delicate elements-gears and faces and covers-are revealed and celebrated for their intricate detail. The art also serves as a chronicle of objects such as metal keys and geared watches that are being replaced by technology. I hope these pieces challenge us to appreciate the inherent art in overlooked ordinary objects and to re-discover the beauty that we hold in our hands.
